New Chevrolet Volt Ads Attack Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius

New Chevrolet Volt Ads Attack Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius
Compared to the 2016 Chevy Volt, a Nissan Leaf could leave you stranded, and it’s at least far from range-anxiety free. Similarly, the 2016 Toyota Prius uses 1990s tech in its NiMh battery.
These assertions are not ours, but, but the gist of new attack advertisements Chevrolet has in store to wake public up to the new 53-mile EV range, Volt. The ads are set to debut online this fall, and also on TV.
“We’re going to go head-to-head with Leaf and Prius,” said Chevrolet’s global chief marketing officer, Tim Mahoney in a report by Ad Age. “The ads allow Chevrolet to talk in one way and they allow Chevrolet’s personality to come through. We’re going to be taking more risks.”
This revelation was given to journalists in San Francisco as the automaker has begun shipping first units to California and 10 other states following California emissions rules, and where Mahoney says it has sold the best.
2016 will be a small model year, the rest if the U.S. will get a 2017 model year beginning next spring, but meanwhile the offensive is on.
The Volt, launched its first generation in 2011 and was nearly hidden in plain sight. The car came on te heels of a bankruptcy, bailout, restructuring, and the Volt was a poster child for Republican election hopefuls because Obama backed it.
Chevrolet caught lots of criticism for not marketing it effectively nationwide, and even seemed to tuck its tail between its legs, revealing in January 2014 it has stopped advertising Volt outside California and tech fairs where public could comprehend its value.
Despite that, the Volt was, when objectively examined, really disruptive and now ads themselves will be disruptive for generation two in a mildly confrontational sort of way.
This psychology will include a scene with Leaf drivers stuck between floors in an elevator, an unnerving encounter, to get the point crosswise of an EV being stuck. Getting caught out of juice in a world oriented toward gasoline is no fun – especially when recharging takes a while for the Leaf unless you run out coincidentally at one of the few level 3 quick chargers out there.
What was not reported is the new 2016 Leaf will offer as much as 106 miles range – no doubt to counter the upgraded Volt as Leaf sales have start to fade compared to last year.
And the new Prius will son be shown in a higher-efficienct “eco” version which may have li-ion battery pioneered since 2012 in the plug-in Prius – and it will have superior fuel economy.
But the extended-range electric Volt is unique with skill to run on electricity then seamlessly switch to its 1.5-liter gas engine for hybrid mode.
Those who get it, well, they get it. But Chevrolet is trying to get past a public with apparent Volt blindness to see whether it can beat analysts predictions on tepid sales.
Mahoney said the attack ad thought is part of a “shattering perceptions” strategy that has increased brand perception by 3 percent.
The base Volt starts at $33,995, in this area $1,115 less than last year while delivering significantly longer EV range, and better mileage in gas operation at 42 mpg.

Canadians Will Get Next-Gen Volt Ahead of 39 US States

Canadians Will Get Next-Gen Volt Ahead of 39 US States The next-generation Chevy Volt may be built exclusively in Detroit, but GM will truck newly minted examples aptly past proximal Chevy dealers for Canadian deliveries before Michigan and 38 other U.S. states are able to buy it.
The reason for this is unclear, but a Chevy spokesperson has tweeted most of Canada may receive the 2016 Volt by November or December, near the time formerly estimated that 39 states that do not follow California emissions rules would as well.

As we reported last week, Chevrolet changed plans for those 39 states SO that they would instead receive a 2017 model Volt next spring while retaining plans for California and 10 states following its emissions rules to receive the 2016 model this fall.
The states in addition to California that will get the Volt are Oregon, Connecticut, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Massachusetts
According to GM Authority, GM has not otherwise revealed a reason for the unusual go. Normally Canada has lagged behind the U.S. in receiving internally produced cars.
The news also adds questions to an explanation given to us by Chevrolet media rep Michele Malcho who said the automaker wants to get deliveries spot on in the largest U.S. markets before moving to other states, including those in which the Volt is not as hot an item.
As a nation, Canada normally buys one-tenth the quantity of cars the U.S. does.
What other considerations are being weighed are unclear but last week, Malcho said Chevrolet rethought its U.S. distribution plot based on past encounter with the first-generation Volt in 2011.
The hope this time, she said, is to avoid frustrations, and ensure a smoother roll-out nationwide. The staged roll-out the first time around saw spotty allocations, customers and dealers wondering when they’d get their cars, and other issues.
“It was a learning encounter, let’s place it that way,” said Malcho, and Chevrolet this time wants to focus on its key markets.
California alone in 2014 accounted for 50 percent of all plug-in electrified vehicle sales, and it has been the Volt’s core market. Other ZEV states as well are stronger, say, than Wyoming for example.
So, Malcho said Chevrolet will get the Volt to these core states, then focus on the 2017 model for them and the rest of the nation next spring.
“We’re going to do it really well in these 10 states then go on,” she said of 10 ZEV states plus California.
This also will give Chevrolet time to do more thorough dealer training in the states where the Volt does not now sell as strongly, she said.
If we learn more, we will update this.

UK Extends £5,000 EV Rebate to February 2016

UK Extends £5,000 EV Rebate to February 2016 The U.K. is adding £200 million to its EV discount program, which will extend the £5,000 new vehicle credit for an three additional months to February 2016.
Previously set to run out this fall, U.K. government officials said they are expanding the rebates to spur more sales of low emission vehicles.
“The U.K. is now the fastest growing market for electric vehicles in Europe,” said Transport Minister Andrew Jones. “We will continue to invest to help make this technology affordable to everyone and to secure the U.K.’s position as a global leader.”
The original discount was made for 50,000 buyers, awarding £5,000 ($7,711) for the buy of what the U.K. marks as ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs). This assemble initially included only battery electric (BEVs) plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), but has since been expanded to fuel cell vehicles as well.

With the additional £200 million ($308 million) for the fund, these grants are now expected to last through February next year. According to Auto Express, the country has already seen positive progression from the grant.
“In the first half of 2015, sales of plug-in vehicles escalated dramatically with a 256 percent progression against the same period in 2014,” Auto Express reported. “By June, ULEV registrations had surpassed that of the whole of 2014.”

IIHS: Front Crash Prevention Systems Better Than Ever

IIHS: Front Crash Prevention Systems Better Than Ever Vehicles that offer automatic braking are on the rise and the systems are better than ever according to a new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The IIHS place 19 different new vehicles (photo from previous testing) with adjoin-crash avoidance systems to the test and fourteen of the models were given a Superior rating, while the other five earned the title of Advanced. To get the Superior rating, vehicles must have an autobrake system that “can avoid a crash or substantially reduce speeds in both tests,” while for Advanced, the vehicle must “have autobrake and avoid a crash or reduce speeds by at least 5 mph.”
These systems work with a amalgamation of lasers, radar or cameras, to detect objects in adjoin of a vehicle. If a crash is deemed imminent, the vehicle will grab the brakes automatically to avoid a collision or at least mitigate the effect of the crash. A Basic rating is also handed out to vehicles that feature forward collision warning systems that do not effect the brakes.
The Superior rating was handed out to the 2016 Acura ILX, MDX, RDX and RLX; 2016 BMW X3; 2015 Chrysler 300 and its twin, the 2015 Dodge Charger; 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class (both Collision Prevention Help Plus and Pre-Safe Brake equipped versions), CLA (both Collision Prevention Help Plus and Distronic Plus equipped versions) and E-Class; and the 2016 Mazda 6 and CX-5.
In the Advanced category, we have the 2016 Volkswagen Golf, Golf SportWagen, Jetta and 2015 Volkswagen Touareg. The BMW X3 is rated an Advanced with the camera-only system called City Braking Function, while adding the camera- and radar-based system bumps it up to Superior.
While most of these systems are available as options, Mercedes is the first automaker to offer a Superior rated system as standard equipment on its vehicles. That doesn’t mean you need to buy a luxury car to get an advanced automatic braking system though, as the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Mazda6 and CX-5 are all moderately priced vehicles with Superior auto braking available.
This technology is on the rise too, with the IIHS saying that 27 percent of all vehicles available for 2015 offer some type of autonomous braking, doubling the amount available back in 2012. Forwrd collision warning, which does not automatically brake for you, is now available on over half of all vehicles available in 2015.

Camouflaged Hyundai Hybrid Spied

Camouflaged Hyundai Hybrid Spied With a teardrop profile culminating in the hatchback’s high rear deck, a recently spied camouflaged mule could easily be mistaken as the next Toyota Prius. But it isn’t.
The photos, captured by AutomobileMag.com, are really of a Hyundai hybrid in testing. To date, Hyundai has been tight-lipped in this area this new hybrid. It’s been known for a while that one was in the works for the Korean automaker, but, with spy shots capturing Elantra GT mules outfitted with hybrid powertrains last summer.
There have yet to be any official comments on the car from Hyundai, though, and previous remarks have only addressed the subject in broad stipulations:
“We will take the lead in the future by raising the competitiveness of our environment-forthcoming cars like hybrid-only cars, plug-in hybrid cars and fuel cell hydrogen cars,” stated CEO Kim Choong-ho.

Many carmakers are now chasing Toyota in the hybrid market, and the Sonata Hybrid is the only non-Toyota model in hybrid charts top five sellers. Last month, Sonata Hybrid sales accounted for 7.22 percent of the hybrid market, directly behind the Prius Liftback, Prius C and Camry Hybrid.

£5,000 UK Consumer Plug-In Car Grant May Soon Expire

£5,000 UK Consumer Plug-In Car Grant May Soon Expire Time is in succession out in Britain for a generous £5,000 ($7,777) grant program for buyers of plug-in electrified vehicles.
With now 35 cars to choose from, and more perks like free parking and charging existing as well, 36,000 grants have been spoken for out of an allotted 50,000 and it’s predicted the program could max out by the end of this year if the present rate of sales continues.
Sales of plug-in electrified cars in the UK started slowly and the grant program intended to kick-start the market in 2011 initially saw modest success, but that has changed, says the Guardian.
For 2015 sales have quadrupled over the same period last year to 11,842 units though May.
The PEV car grant along with £8,000 for plug-in electrified vans has seen sales spiral upwards with cars like the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid being among the top sellers.
In a land where petrol is quite pricey, the Guardian points out the value proposition for plug-in cars has not been lost on many a consumer.
“A full charge will cost around £2 to £3 and will give a typical range of around 100 miles,” says the Guardian. “Pouring 100 miles in a petrol or diesel car will cost around £12 to £18.”
Plug-in cars but remain only 2.5 percent of the market, and now it looks like a major incentive may be drying up.
The Guardian does not mention whether the government might extend the perk, and suggest only that it will soon be going away.

Average New Car Window Sticker 25.4 mpg in June

Average New Car Window Sticker 25.4 mpg in June The average fuel economy of new cars sold has increased over the years but not without insignificant setbacks, and June’s average window sticker was one of them, declining 0.1 mpg to 25.4 mpg.
This tick backwards was documented by researchers Michael Sivak, Ph.D. and Brandon Schoettle of the Sustainable Worldwide Transportation University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.
Since UMTRI has been tracking average window sticker values in October 2007, EPA-rated fuel economy has increased for new cars sold by 5.3 mpg.
The researchers speculate increased sales of light trucks and SUVs in June are accountable for the mpg decline.
According to the UMTRI’s Eco-Pouring Index which estimates average monthly greenhouse gas emissions by an individual U.S. driver, this measure was up from 0.82 in Development to 0.85 in April.
The lower the value the better here, so GHG is up a bit as well. Since October 2007, emissions in April were lower by 15 percent but 9 percet higher than in August 2014 which was a record month for these measures.
