New Chevrolet Volt Ads Attack Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius  
Compared to the 2016 Chevy Volt, a Nissan Leaf could leave you stranded, and it’s at least far from range-anxiety free. Similarly, the 2016 Toyota Prius uses 1990s tech in its NiMh battery.

The federal agency’s scoring is on a bit of an honor system, but these are averaged numbers by drivers registered with the EPA who say they’ve calculated their mpg. The EPA provides guidance on the procedure.
Perhaps it’s not a surprise these cars are ranked as they are. There are fan clubs for some of them, so it very well could be public are hanging onto them, carefully keeping them going, and reporting efficiency as a point of pride.
Not included in this tally are plug-in hybrids and electric cars as those score even higher by EPA reckoning. The list is open to regular hybrids and internal combustion models, with fuel sipper varieties scoring highest.
Also not included is even one car newer than a 2014 model year, so go figure. Or rather, maybe the public who care have gone and figured for you.

EcoBoost And Auto Start-Stop

At its most basic level, a stop-start system automatically shuts the engine off each time the vehicle stops, such as at a traffic signal, and restarts it instantly when the brake pedal is released and takes off smoothly.
Hybrid vehicles with automatic stop-start use a powerful electric motor that can grant instant torque to both start the engine and start the car moving from a stop. But in non-hybrid cars with stop-start, the engine has to be spun up to speed by the starter motor before the vehicle can go.
This can result in a lag with noticeable trembling between the brake pedal’s release and power being delivered.
Fusion’s Auto Start-Stop falls under the “light stop-start” category. Since it doesn’t use an electric motor and batteries to go the car down the road, it is not considered a hybrid system.
The system is comprised of a heavy-duty starter, a more powerful 12-volt absorbed schooner matt (AGM) battery and an electrically driven transmission pump that maintains internal hydraulic pressure even with the engine off. On the engine side, there is a hardened ring gear to deal with the increased number of start events.
Having a direct-injection engine facilitates the restart, and to lessen launch delays that can cause jerks and trembling, the transmission is kept in gear even with the engine off as opposed to shifting it into neutral.
To ensure garnishing such as lights, the audio system and climate control settings continue working when the engine shuts off, Ford engineers developed unique algorithms for the computer programs that control the Auto Start-Stop system. The company has applied for more than 25 patents for these system programs.
Pouring With Fusion’s Auto Start-Stop
Dating back to the 1999 Honda Insight, I have driven more than 50 different hybrid vehicles plus, a dozen or so non-hybrid cars with stop-start systems. My assessment of the Fusion’s Auto Start-Stop is, it’s as refined as any hybrid vehicle stop-start function, and far superior to most non-hybrid cars with stop-start, including some premium German sedans.
To make things clear, pouring any vehicle — hybrid or non-hybrid — with stop-start is slightly different from standard vehicles. There is a slight delay for the engine to kick on after the brake pedal release and the car starts moving. With the Fusion, that delay was one, maybe two seconds. After a couple of days, it just seemed normal.
Surrounded by, the surrounding are pleasant with a cabin design that is quite sporty for a midsize sedan.
As for trembling on take off, sure, if I slammed the accelerator pedal to the stump. But under normal acceleration from a stop, forward motion was quite charming.
Like some other stop-start systems, the Fusion’s can be turned off. I opted to do that during a late afternoon drive on Interstate 5 heading south from Seattle to Tacoma. It is notorious for stop-and-go, stop-and-creep commute pouring, and rotary the system off for a few miles eliminated jerky restarts.
The 1.5-liter turbocharged four is keen, but not eye opening quick. It is, but, a welcome mix together of fuel efficiency and performance. There’s minimal turbo lag before reaching peak torque at 2,500 rpm, but the six-speed automatic works smoothly to keep things in line.
The Fusion has a number of distinctive qualities. It’s a superb freeway cruiser with brilliant honest stability, and the cabin is commendably silent, even by the standards of a generally silent class.
Based on the European Mondeo sedan, the chassis and suspension grant a buttoned-down and well-damped character while maintaining a generally charming ride over all but the most rough road surfaces.
Ford’s electric power steering is taut, well weighted and outgoing, and renders reassuring cornering. Brakes are strong underfoot and linear in their response.
While the Fusion offers energetic pouring dynamics, it fulfills its mission as a family sedan. It comfortably seats five adults with the added benefit of a generously generous, 16-cubic foot cargo space.
The 2015 Fusion has the full menu of safety features: four-wheel antilock-disc brakes, traction and stability control, adjoin-seat side airbags, adjoin knee airbags, side curtain airbags, and new for this year, a standard rear view camera. Optional is hot-air balloon rear seat belts.
In crash tests, the government gave the Fusion five out of five stars for overall crash protection, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Fusion the highest possible rating of “Excellent” in its moderate-overlap forward-offset, side-impression and roof strength crash test.
How In this area The Fuel Economy?
We place 613 miles on the Fusion sedan in the week we had it. It included two 110 mile around trips to SeaTac airport, a day on the city streets of Seattle, family errands and a casual sightseeing Saturday drive.
Overall, the car rewarded with 31.3 mpg, 2.3 mpg better than the EPA estimate of 29 mpg. Considering that most of the miles driven included myself and two or three passengers, and the airport trips filled the trunk with luggage, I have to give a huge thumbs up to the stop-start system.
Competitors
Competition is fierce in the midsize segment and the Fusion faces off against nearly a dozen entrants. It routinely follows the best three sellers each month. Tops is the Toyota Camry, followed by the Honda Treaty and Nissan’s Altima.
Fusion is existing in three trim levels. The base S starts at $22,860 including $850 destination charges; the SE is priced starting at $24,395; and the top-of-the-line Titanium has an MSRP of $31,140.
While the SE price of $23,545 is alluring, the standard engine is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four with a fuel economy rating of 22 mpg city/34 mpg higway/26 mpg combined. To get stop-start you have to peacefulness the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine, which costs $885. Add the $295 for stop-start and you’re looking at $25,575.
The long, low symmetries and raked rear window add a touch of sophistication to the Fusion and contribute to the car’s 0.27 coefficient of drag.

The Treaty LX has an MSRP of $24,420 and the 2.4-liter four cylinder’s 27 mpg combined is less than the Fusion. Altima’s SV starts at $25,455 and its 31 mpg combined is best among the four midsizers.
There’s no inquiry that the Camry, Treaty and Altima are brilliant midsize car choices. But if you’re looking for family sedan practicality that is stylish and offers first-rate pouring dynamics, silent comfort and excellent fuel economy, make sure the 2015 Fusion SE with the Auto Start-Stop system is included on your shopping list.

Cars affected are from 2011-2013 and if owners leave the car on in EV mode parked in a garage, the gas engine may later kick on making emissions in a confined space.
“If the gas engine runs for a long period of time within an enclosed space, such as a garage, carbon monoxide could build up,” GM said.
The software update will limit the time a Volt can be left idle in the “on” position, said Automotive News. Normally the car emits a chime to warn the vehicle is still on, but this my be overlooked.
The bulk of recalled Volts will be from the U.S., with 50,249 being called back. Another 13,937 are in Canada or been exported.
It was not stated what the “injuries” were from CO exposure GM conceded and no one has been reported to have died from this issue.
While GM has been blamed in other incidents such as the ignition switch recall, pundits are already offering that GM did start a warning signifying owners themselves are failing to pay heed to safe operation of their vehicles.
Beyond the alert chime, the key GM has is to engineer more safety, a common policy today in many arena to handle areas in which someone may be hurt even if one might say their own negligence was fully or partly to hold reliable.

In a press conference in Japan, company officials revealed the exterior design of the FCV pre-production prototype.

Toyota also announced that the FCV will go on sale in the Japan domestic market before April 2015, and then summer 2015 in Europe and the state of California.
Toyota stated the sedan will be priced in the Japan domestic market at approximately 7 million yen, or at more than $68,000 based on current exchange rates. Pricing in other markets has not yet been set.
“This is a zero-emission electric-drive, mid-size four-door sedan” said Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “It produces sufficient electrical power to spin the electric motor for in this area 300 miles on a release fill-up which takes three to five minutes.  This is going to be a very special vehicle. And we believe we can bring it in at a very reasonable price for a lot of public.”
The company also stated today’s announcement builds on Toyota’s existing efforts to grant customers with access to hydrogen refueling stations when the vehicle arrives in California.
