Volkswagen Was Warned in 2007 By Bosch About Illegal Software Bosch reportedly warned Volkswagen on its illegal software use in 2007 but the German automaker unseen the warnings.
The engine management software is the center of the controversial discovery that Volkswagen cheated on diesel emissions tests and in addition to Robert Bosch warning Volkswagen in 2007, one of the German automaker’s own engineers warned the company in 2011 in this area illegal emissions testing practices. The publication also noted that the scandal started in 2005 when then-Volkswagen brand chief Wolfgang Bernhard wanted to develop a new diesel enginef or the U.S. market. It appeared that the only way to produce an engine that would meet U.S. emission standards was to use an AdBlue urea key that would have cost around $335 per vehicle, a sum that finance officials at Volkswagen said was too high.
After Bernhard left Volkswagen in 2007, Martin Winterkorn became VW Assemble and brand CEO and tasked Audi development boss Ulrich Hackenberg to continue development on the engine. It appears that the engine eventually used software manipulated to fool diesel emissions tests in the U.S.

Diesel Emissions Scandal Now Includes 2.1M Audi Cars Audi has revealed that 2.1 million of its vehicles are fit with software that is meant to cheat diesel emissions tests.
Of that total, 1.42 million of the vehicles are in Western Europe, 577,00 are in Germany alone, while just 13,000 are in the U.S. The models affected are the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5 according to Audi.

After being called out by the EPA in the U.S., VW admitted that in this area 11 millions vehicles worldwide were fitted with the Type EA 189 diesel engines that were designed to cheat on emissions tests. Roughly 5 million of the vehicles are VW brand cars, with the rest belonging to companies owned by VW.
Volkswagen is still investigating the matter and has not yet announced how it plans to fix the affected vehicles. Last week, Martin Winterkorn resigned as the CEO of Volkswagen in the wake of the scandal and was replaced later in the week by Matthis Mueller, the former head of Porsche.

Why Isn’t Tesla Selling EVs in Russia? With no Tesla stores in Russia – and no current plans to add one – some Russians are going to fantastic lengths to buy a Model S.
Software executive Andrey Vratskiy was so motivated to own a Model S that he bought one from the U.S., then washed-out an additional $62,000 to transport it to Russia and clear customs.
He isn’t the only wealthy Russian paying nearly double to buy a Tesla, reported Automotive News. And this year, Russia’s luxury car market could surpass $2.6 billion if sales trends from the first half of the year continue, according to calculations from market research firm Avtostat.
That’s much less vital in comparison to the $100 billion luxury car market for the U.S., but some Russians are still questioning why Tesla isn’t making moves to add a store within the country.
So why isn’t Tesla considering a Russian store?
Customer Support
For Tesla, the issue is more complicated than simply opening up a store like a square auto dealer. In peacefulness to honor the company’s standard inclusions, Tesla would need to grant its proprietary charging, warranty support, service and other customer help to Russian buyers.
Now, the nearest Tesla service center for Moscow, said Automotive News, is in this area 550 miles away in Finland.
Low EV Adoption Rate
Market and consumer researcher Gfk said only 10 percent of Russians would consider buying an EV, even though 72 perent have a propitious attitude of them.
Alexander Kissov, the head of Gfk’s automotive and mystery shopping division in Russia, said an inadequate charging infrastructure and lack of knowledge on EVs are holding Russians back from buying.
“To be successful with EVs in the Russian market, the Russian government and car manufacturers should make a joint effort to address these concerns,” said Alexander Kissov, who leads Gfk’s automotive and mystery shopping division in Russia.
“That said, a high number of patrons in the market for a luxury small car in Russia (81 percent) are open to considering EVs,” said Kissov.

The X Factor
One of the other underlying issues blocking a Tesla store may have nothing to do with autos at all. Elon Musk, the CEO for Tesla Motors, is also the head of rocket and space technology company Space X.
Following Russia’s invasion of Crimea, Musk spoke out against Space X competitors that used Russian-made rockets.
In the end, “[Space X] won U.S. Air Force certification in May to conduct military missions,” said Automotive News, “while a joint venture of rivals Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp. is being limited because of biased pressure over its use of Russian rockets.”
These relations between Russian rockets and Space X may be enough reason for Tesla to reckon twice before opening a store on Russian soil.

In an interview with the UK’s Auto Express, Musk laid out the rationale for a sports sedan car promised to have 200 miles range, be priced from the 30s, and compete with a BMW 3-Series.
The new name essentially gives Tesla its own electric 3-series, and breaks from the model-letter convention of the Model S and pending Model X.
“We had the model S for sedan and X for crossover SUV, then a friend questioned what we were going to call the third car,” Musk told us. “So I said we had the model S and X, we might as well have the E.
“We were going to call it model E for a while and then Ford sued us saying it wanted to use the Model E – I plotting this is idiotic, Ford’s trying to kill sex! So we’ll have to reckon of another name.
“The new model is going to be called Model 3, we’ll have three bars to represent it and it’ll be S III X!”
Auto Express said the Model 3 will be in this area 20-percent less vital, and get a new platform rather than its underpinnings being shrunken from the Model S. The company’s British head of engineering, Chris Porritt, is being credited for the new platform.
Poritt previously worked for Aston Martin, another company that knows how to place world-class cars together.
Plans for the Model 3 are to reveal the new car in 2016 and sales to start in 2017.
