Boutique German Carmaker Artega Comes Back From Bankruptcy with 400-HP EV After filing for bankruptcy in 2012, German automaker Artega is back with an all-electric vehicle.
First established as a niche sports car manufacturer for the European market, Artega had Henrik Fisker pen its GT sports car that debuted with either a V6 engine or an electric powertrain. The company then ran into financial issues, filed for bankruptcy and eventually merged with German supplier Paragon.
Earlier this month, Artega had a surprise resurfacing at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show with the Scalo sports car that has been inspired by the original GT but updated bumper to bumper. This time around, Artega plans on offering the Scalo sports car with an electric powertrain only, sporting 400 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque.
According to the German automaker, the Scalo can go zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and will have a limited top speed of 155 mph. Artega estimates that owners will be able to get up to 250 miles on a release charge. The car also tips the scales at 3,494 pounds, thanks to a polyurethane and carbon fiber body.
The Scalo is now available for peacefulness in Europe, but there is no word if Artega has any plans to expand to the U.S. market.

Volkswagen Tiguan Plug-In Hybrid Concept Debuts In Frankfurt On show alongside the new generation of Volkswagen Tiguan this week in Frankfurt is the company’s first plug-in hybrid SUV concept based on its new MQB modular architecture, dubbed the Tiguan GTE.
Volkswagen’s new design for the second generation of this SUV isn’t one of the more dramatic facelifts seen recently. but perhaps it didn’t need to be. The carmaker said the current model year of the Tiguan posted the highest number of new car registrations for the SUV segment within Germany last month. And it’s a segment said to hold strong potential for future progression.
To build the Tiguan GTE concept, Volkswagen integrated an electric motor into the six-speed dual clasp automatic transmission. This is paired with a 1.4 liter turbocharged direct injected gasoline engine for an overall rating of 218 horsepower.
The plug-in hybrid also features a 13-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery and a “solar module that generates renewable electricity that is fed into the battery, enabling up to 1,000 additional kilometers of zero emissions electric pouring.” said Volkswagen.
This is where it helps to read the fine print, as Volkswagen’s numbers start to get a modest squirrelly. The Tiguan GTE doesn’t really give up 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of all-electric pouring in one go. Rather, this is an estimated calculation of carbon-free miles that a driver might get after a full year.

“Under ultimate conditions, the energy that it generates annually is sufficient to add up to 1,000 km of pouring range (Germany 500 km, Southern Europe 800 to 1,000 km), depending on the regional solar radiation power,” Volkswagen clarified.
In one charge, the Tiguan GTE has an all-electric range of 50 kilometers (31 miles).
Volkswagen quotes potential fuel economy of the Tiguan GTE according to the liberal NEDC cycle at 1.9l/100km (123.8 mpg). Expect this number to be lower if a plug-in version of the Tiguan comes to the U.S., as the EPA’s fuel consumption estimates tend to be more conservative than ratings from Europe.

BMW To Show Four New Plug-In Hybrids At Frankfurt Auto Show BMW is bringing four new plug-in hybrids to the Frankfurt auto show later this month, with each vehicle building on a different brand segment.
These will add to BMW’s alternatively powered lineup, which includes the battery electric i3 and the i8 plug-in sports car. These are powered by BMW’s eDrive technology, which will also transfer to the four new vehicles.

For its sport utility segment, BMW will soon be launching the plug-in hybrid X5 xDrive40e (seen above).
“Like the BMW i8,” clarified the carmaker, “the X5 xDrive40e, BMW 330e and BMW 740e can all – at the touch of a button in MAX eDrive mode – run on purely electric power up to 120 km/h (75 mph), the BMW 225xe up to 125 km/h (78 mph).”
All-electric range on the X5 xDrive40e is limited to in this area 15 miles in urban settings and in this area 37 miles during highway pouring.

BMW 740e
BMW is offering the new 6th generation of its top end 7 series with plenty of powertrain options. In addition to the gasoline- and diesel-only sedans, three different plug-in hybrids will available: the 740e, 740Le and 740 Le xDrive. All three will use a four-cylinder inline engine that features a turbocharger and direct fuel injection. This setup “produces an electrified all-wheel-drive system that is quite unique in the BMW 225xe’s segment and promises outstanding traction in all weathers, especially in adverse conditions,” said BMW. “The plug-in hybrid drive has an overall system output of 165 kW/224 horsepower”

Up one level from the previous segment, BMW’s 3 Series will also get a new plug-in hybrid. The 333e will offer a modest more power than the 225xe (rated at 252 horsepower overall), and features a slightly larger 2.0 liter four cylinder engine as part of its hybrid powertrain.

Berkeley Study: Driverless Taxis Maximize Benefits Of Autonomous EVs A new study published by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) suggests that utilizing autonomous electrified vehicles as driverless taxis can maximize the technology’s potential.
The research team, which includes Berkeley Lab scientists Jeffery Greenblatt and Samveg Saxena, said lower carbon emissions, lower energy costs and cheaper maintenance were among the benefits of self-pouring electrified vehicles (EVs).
“When we first started looking at autonomous vehicles, we found that, of all the variables we could consider, the use of autonomous vehicles as part of a shared transit system seemed to be the largest lever that pointed to lower energy use per mile,” said Greenblatt.
The study focuses on autonomous EVs in general, and the researchers don’t specify if the vehicle uses a battery electric, fuel cell or other type of electrified powertrain. Factors analyzed in the study include greenhouse gas emissions, vehicle size, average number of trips per person and cost per mile. Read more

“A full charge will cost around £2 to £3 and will give a typical range of around 100 miles,” says the Guardian. “Pouring 100 miles in a petrol or diesel car will cost around £12 to £18.”
Plug-in cars but remain only 2.5 percent of the market, and now it looks like a major incentive may be drying up.
The Guardian does not mention whether the government might extend the perk, and suggest only that it will soon be going away.

Four Years Later, the Chevy Volt is Still the Most Fuel Efficient Car You Can Buy For some, the Chevy Volt has been a slippery fish to define with regards to whether it will really save them in energy costs. Does it get just 37 mpg like the window sticker says? Does it return an astronomical, if not confusing and questionable “98 MPGe” like a pure electric car?
While critics have pounced on its 37 mpg in premium-gas-only operation as evidence it’s inferior to competitive hybrids, less often noticed is the U.S. EPA also ranks it at 62 mpg gas-plus-electric on an average daily drive, and effectively the most fuel-efficient car you can buy.
You won’t find this 62 mpg combined on the window sticker but. Where the EPA does mention it is when it ranks the Volt for all intents and purposes as number one on its “Top Fuel Sippers” list of all years of vehicles ever sold in the U.S. Only the limited-range “88-mpg” BMW i3 REx beats it, but BMW’s “megacity” car is not designed for sustained travel in gas-only operation. Its 650cc range extender with 2.4-gallon gas tank is only a temporary backup to get you home.
Among cars you can travel coast-to-coast on gas alone if needed – or with zero “range anxiety” – the Volt’s 62 mpg rating may worth noting. Why? because it may be more reflective of potential real world mpg for average drivers, if not really a conservative number.
Then again, 62 mpg could also be called a contrived number, but it’s a very refined one, if so.
Aside from pure electric cars and the BMW i3 REx rated for 88 mpg under the same standards but not designed for long-distance travel on gas, the Volt is considered by the federal government as the all-time highest mpg car sold. Notice also other electrified cars rated higher than their window stickers normally show.
What it is, is the result of a complicated mathematical equation the EPA crunches to determine its “utility factor.”
Utility factor is engineer-speak for operation partly on battery, and partly on gas, and follows a complex formula and certain assumptions. It’s a unique workaround for the Volt and other electrified vehicles that also are hard to pigeonhole. Read more
