Boutique German Carmaker Artega Comes Back From Bankruptcy with 400-HP EV After filing for bankruptcy in 2012, German automaker Artega is back with an all-electric vehicle.
First established as a niche sports car manufacturer for the European market, Artega had Henrik Fisker pen its GT sports car that debuted with either a V6 engine or an electric powertrain. The company then ran into financial issues, filed for bankruptcy and eventually merged with German supplier Paragon.
Earlier this month, Artega had a surprise resurfacing at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show with the Scalo sports car that has been inspired by the original GT but updated bumper to bumper. This time around, Artega plans on offering the Scalo sports car with an electric powertrain only, sporting 400 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque.
According to the German automaker, the Scalo can go zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and will have a limited top speed of 155 mph. Artega estimates that owners will be able to get up to 250 miles on a release charge. The car also tips the scales at 3,494 pounds, thanks to a polyurethane and carbon fiber body.
The Scalo is now available for peacefulness in Europe, but there is no word if Artega has any plans to expand to the U.S. market.

Study: EPA Understates Hybrid MPG By Up To 33 Percent Hybrid vehicles may really get much better fuel economy than their EPA-rated stickers say, according to a new study.
The analysis, conducted by Britt A. Holmén and Karen M. Changing testing methods to real-life pouring conditions increased fuel economy for the Camry Hybrid by as much as 33 percent, said Holmén and Sentoff.
“Our real-world … measurements suggest computed city cycle [square vehicle] fuel use would be nearly 2 times higher than for the [hybrid vehicle] and 1.3 times higher than the [hybrid vehicle] for highway pouring,” the researchers said in their recently published paper. “These ratios exceed the factors that EPA fuel economy values would predict for these vehicle types.”
“Thus,” they added, “inclusion of real-world road grade and ambient conditions in our [vehicle specific power] and emissions measurements, compared to controlled laboratory tests, show fuel consumption benefits for the [hybrid vehicle] increased 18 percent and 33 percent (highway and city, respectively) compared to estimates based on EPA adjusted fuel economy “sticker” values.”

The EPA-rating on the test car, a 2010 Camry Hybrid, is 33 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Using the calculations from this study bumps the sticker-stated fuel economy up to in this area 44 city/40 highway. “Our results with one vehicle pair exhibit that similar studies can be used to develop robust models of all types of [hybrid] platforms under actual pouring conditions and improve quantitative estimates of the future fleet contributions to the U.S. CO2 emissions inventory and petroleum consumption. Studies such as these are critical as [hybrid vehicles] and other electrified vehicles comprise a larger part of the on-road fleet.”

As the duo mentioned, more research is de rigueur to see if these results are applicable to other hybrid vehicles. But with fuel savings potentially 33 percent higher than previously plotting, it’s likely that others will step forward to additional investigate the real-world fuel economies of electrified powertrains.

For the first time also, the new rules would account for efficiency of trailers. This would exclude some categories including mobile homes, but the plot for certain trailers would start in 2018 and ramp up toward 2021 with voluntary compliance requested in the interim.
“Cost effective technologies for trailers – including aerodynamic devices, light weight construction and self-inflating tires – can significantly reduce total fuel consumption by tractor-trailers, while paying back the owners in less than two years due to the fuel saved,” said the EPA in a statement.
Today’s news was announced after three years of “extensive testing and research,” the case is presented as a strong one, and the EPA touted benefits up adjoin that would result with implementation of the standards.
Chief among these is expected reduction of CO2 emissions by approximately 1 billion metric tons, fuel costs cut by approximately $170 billion, and oil consumption cut by up to 1.8 billion barrels over the lifetime of the vehicles sold during the program’s time frame.
“These reductions are nearly equal to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with energy use by all U.S. residences in one year,” said the EPA in a statement. “The total oil savings under the program would be superior than a year’s worth of U.S. imports from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).”
“Once upon a time, to be pro-environment you had to be anti-huge-vehicles. This rule will change that,” said U.S Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “In fact, these efficiency standards are excellent for the environment – and the economy. Connecticut Offering Up To $3,000 in Electrified Vehicle Rebates This past Tuesday, Connecticut Governor Daniel P. Malloy announced the state will be giving up to $3,000 rebates to those who buy electric, fuel cell, or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Rebates, which will be applied during the point of sale, are available to residents, municipalities, and businesses of Connecticut and can range from $750 to $3,000 depending on the range of the vehicle.
“This discount puts money aptly back in public’s pockets and makes the cost of purchasing or leasing an electric vehicle competitive with the price of a square car,” Malloy said at Crowley Ford in Plainville.
A federal tax credit of $7,500 is also available to green vehicle purchasers, which can be added to the state rebates for increased overall vehicle cost reductions. Presently fuel cell cars are not available yet, but are expected to in the next couple of years or so.
These incentives are funded by $1 million from a multi-million dollar settlement paid to the state when Nstar, a Massachusetts utility company, merged with Northeast Utilities to start what’s now known as Eversource Energy.

In addition to the incentives introduced, a new bill is working its way through Connecticut’s General Assembly which would allow Tesla to sell its vehicles directly to the customers, bypassing third-party dealerships.

Honda Previews Upcoming FCV, EV, PHEV In Detroit Honda didn’t launch any production models at Detroit’s annual North American International Auto Show.
