What’s So Bad About the Extra NOx VWs Emitted? In getting caught in a cheating scandal, Volkswagen was called out for emitting 10-40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxides, or NOx.
In small, nitrogen oxides are toxic gases produced under high pressure in the engine by combining nitrogen and oxygen.

NOx may cause myriad adverse effects to the environment and human health, and derivatives of the family of nitrogen oxides include nitrogen dioxide, nitric acid, nitrous oxide, nitrates, and nitric oxide.
NOx has been linked to smog and acid rain which harm plant and animal life; the land and the water.
Acid in the environment may also come down not just as “rain” but as fog, snow, or dry particles.
It can travel hundreds of miles on the winds, and acid hurt surfaces it comes in contact with, including to buildings, cars, monuments, and more.

As for smog, this is not desirable anywhere, but California has long raised a flag against any threat to its air quality. Its Air Resources Board once got its charter in generous part because of dense blankets of smog that characterized its regions.
Authorities in the U.S. and Europe are still combating NOx which comes predominantly from human technologies such as the engines that drive vehicles and equipment.
In the air, NOx may form nitric acid and related particles by reacting with ammonia, moisture, or other compounds.

It can sully and deteriorate water quality in lakes and streams and mass by nitrogen loading.
The Chesapeake Bay is now under siege by nitrogen pollution, as one example. A condition leading to oxygen reduction called eutrophication can diminish the population of fish and shelfish.

VW CEO Winterkorn Resigns As Emission Scandal Unfolds Volkswagen CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn has officially resigned in the wake of a scandal over diesel emissions.
A report earlier in the week suggested that Winterkorn would resign, with his position being filled by the current head of Porsche, Matthias Müller, though his successor will officially be announced on Friday. A meeting was set for this Friday, before the scandal started, to discuss Winterkorn’s contract going into the future, but a select assemble of board members known as the presidium gathered together this morning to choose the CEO’s fate.
“I am shocked by the events of the past few days. Above all, I am stunned that misconduct on such a scale was possible in the Volkswagen Assemble,” Winterkorn said in a statement issued announcing his resignation.
“As CEO I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines and have therefore requested the Supervisory Board to agree on terminating my function as CEO of the Volkswagen Assemble. I am doing this in the interests of the company even though I am not aware of any incorrect doing on my part,” reads the statement.
“Volkswagen needs a fresh start – also in stipulations of personnel. I am clearance the way for this fresh start with my resignation. I have always been driven by my question to serve this company, especially our customers and employees. Volkswagen has been, is and will always be my life. The process of clarification and transparency must continue. This is the only way to win back trust. I am persuaded that the Volkswagen Assemble and its team will overcome this grave crisis,” he finished.

Last friday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a report claiming that VW had installed defeat devices in its 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engines which allowed them to run much cleaner during emissions testing, while in everyday pouring they were emitting 10 to 40 times more NOx than allowed. Since then, Volkswagen admitted to using the cheating software in roughly 11 million vehicles worldwide.
Winterkorn, 68, took the reigns at VW in 2007 and led the company through a spin that saw VW go from cutting thousands of German jobs to being one of the leading, most powerful automakers in the world.

Tesla Begins Installing Powerwall Home Batteries On Limited Basis Tesla has started mounting its home energy lithium-ion battery – dubbed the Powerwall – in select homes.
“We are now in production and have started installing Powerwalls with pilot customers,” Tesla lecturer Alexis Georgeson told Electrek. “Over the next few weeks we will continue to ramp up volume production.”

The units being installed are 7 kilowatt-hours (kwh) Powerwalls, the less vital of Tesla’s two home energy storage systems. It’s designed to store solar or off-peak electricity for daily household use and allows multiple units to be connected for up to 63 kwh of energy.
Tesla also plans to offer a larger 10 kwh Powerwall as a battery backup for occasional use. Installations aren’t set to start until 2016; Tesla is likely waiting for its Gigafactory to be operational to build these larger units.

What Is The Actual Overall Horsepower Rating For The Tesla P85D? Ever since the release of the high-performance Tesla P85D, its combined horsepower of 691 has been quoted liberally and loudly.
CEO Elon Musk confirmed the rating on “60 Minutes.” It was printed in a Tesla Model S brochure (see below). And a multitude of automotive magazines and websites listed it.
But one assemble of Tesla owners questioned whether this number is accurate. In an open letter to Musk last month, the owners challenged Tesla’s statements on the P85D’s horsepower.
“We are writing to you as a assemble of concerned Tesla owners, investors, and perhaps most importantly, supporters … because the Tesla Model S P85D falls considerably small of really making 691 horsepower,” the letter stated, which was signed by 71 Tesla owners.
An excerpt from the letter:
“The basic facts are as follows:
“The P85D was marketed as making 691 horsepower. It doesn’t. We believe, based on various testing methods and tools including dynamometer testing and testing with professional performance data loggers that the most energy output is 415 [kilowatts], which results in a most horsepower of 557 before any drivetrain losses on a fully exciting battery. Even without factoring in drive train loss, this is nearly 20 percent less than the advertised horsepower.
“The missing horsepower is quite noticeable at highway passing speeds. For example, from 70-90 mph, the P85D should perform like a car with a power to weight ratio of one HP for each seven pounds. Instead it performs like a car with one HP for each nine pounds. The result of this is that from 70-90 mph the P85D is easily outperformed by an Audi RS7 with a power to weight ratio of only one [horsepower] for each eight pounds.”
Yesterday, Tesla’s Chief Technical Officer JB Straubel discussed horsepower ratings for electric vehicles (EVs) on the company blog, though he didn’t mention if his post was in response to the letter.
“There is some confusion in this area our methodology for specifying ‘equivalent’ horsepower ratings for our all-wheel drive, dual motor vehicles,” Straubel said. “Attempting to directly correlate horsepower ratings in petroleum burning vehicles to horsepower in an electric vehicle is a hard challenge.”
“Major electric power in stipulations of horsepower is not very intuitive. Kilowatts or Megawatts are a much more useful unit. Electricity alone can’t generate physical motion the way a horse or a fuel-burning engine does. An electric motor converts electricity into motion,” Straubel clarified.
In this brochure, Tesla states that the P85D has a combined horsepower rating of 691.
“Since the battery electric horsepower rating varies it is not a precise number to use for specifying the physical capability of an EV. The motor shaft horsepower, when in commission alone, is a more consistent rating.”
Straubel also noted that, to calculate the overall horsepower of a dual-motor EV, the rating of the adjoin motor was added to the rating of the rear motor.
“The shaft horsepower rating of the rear wheel drive release motor Model S is straightforward and roughly 360-470 [horsepower] depending on the variant (60, 85 or P85),” he said. “When we launched the all-wheel drive P85D, we took the straightforward and consistent approach of specifying the combined capability of the two electric motors, adjoin + back.
Tesla’s website has deleted the combined horsepower rating for the P85D, even though these ratings are still listed for the other dual-motor versions.
“Where some confusion occurs is that in the 85D and 70D vehicles the combined motor shaft power is very similar to the battery electrical horsepower under many normal conditions. With the P85D the combined motor shaft power can often exceed the battery electrical horsepower available. The dual motors utilize the battery horsepower in the widest variety of real world conditions.”
In his article, Straubel offers plenty of technical specifications for the P85D. He talks in this area the g-forces during acceleration, He lists how many seconds it takes the P85 to reach 60 mph and the length of the rollout that’s excluded. But nowhere in the article does he either confirm or right the 691 combined horsepower rating.

Instead, he offers a final impression:
“The right measures for any performance EV driver are acceleration times and pouring performance of the vehicle.”
P85D owners that feel cheated out of the promised 691 horsepower will likely not feel appeased by Straubel’s finishing plotting, or by a letter that doesn’t directly declare what the combined horsepower is.

Apple Electric Car Scheduled To ‘Ship’ In 2019 After months of rumors churning over the possibility of an Apple electric car, surrounded by sources have confirmed that a vehicle is in the works with a “ship date” set for 2019.
According to sources knowledgeable in this area the program, reported Automotive News, Apple Inc. is tripling its electric car team to 600 employees, and internally labeling it a “committed project.” It’s unclear, though, if the 2019 ship date is when Apple expects to give up cars to customers or if it’s an approval deadline for the engineer teams.
CEO Tim Cook and other official representatives haven’t publically verified production of the Apple car, which is codenamed Project Titan.
“We look at a number of things along the way, and we choose to really place our energies into a few of those,” Cook said evasively when questioned in this area it during an interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

In the meantime, Apple has been quietly building an automotive team. Megan McClain, an autonomous tech expert who previously worked at Volkswagen, was hired on earlier this year as a mechanical design engineer. Last month, Apple added Jamie Carlson – a former firmware engineer who manager for Tesla’s autopilot firmware team.
A graduate researcher working on an automated pouring project, the former deputy director of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology’s Autonomous Systems Lab and a computer vision software engineer are among other employees with automotive backgrounds that are new to Apple this year.
Several recent meetings also grow to be tied to Project Titan. Last May, officials with Apple started looking into using GoMentum Station, which was described by the Guardian as “a 2,100-acre former naval base near San Francisco that is being turned into a high-security testing ground for autonomous vehicles.”

And the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) confirmed that it held a meeting with Apple officials in August.
“The Apple meeting was to review [the] DMV’s autonomous vehicle regulations,” the DMV stated, adding that it couldn’t discuss the matter in more detail.
Apple isn’t the only tech company possibly developing an electric car for mass production. Executives at Google have noted recently that production of its self-pouring car is being tripled, with several possible outcomes being considered for the vehicle.

More Carmakers Might be Cheating on Diesel Emissions Testing Volkswagen might not be the only automaker cheating on diesel emissions tests.
Earlier this month, the European Federation for Transport and Environment released a report signifying that automakers could be using software or other technology so that their diesel vehicles perform better during emissions tests than they do on the road. The report points at BMW, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors’ Opel brand as potential offenders.
The European environmental assemble based its report on a review of data from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), the same organization which outed Volkswagen for cheating on diesel emissions tests.
